I always imagine the observer or the witness as the stable core around which swirls passing emotions and thoughts. The Witness allow us to survey the passions, obsessions, and melodramas of the ordinary mind. Through the witness perspective we are implementing Heseinberg's Uncertainty Principle, the act of observing a thing changes the nature of what is observed. The witness is to me the core self, and it operates through the ego, which is what you believe yourself to be. I can identify with my programmed ego or I can reprogram my ego by becoming the observer of my experience. To feel without feeling.
From the eye of the storm, I observe my own experience.
The Buddhists call it "Mindfulness":
"In opening the mind, or 'letting go', we bring attention to one point, on just watching, or being silent witness who is aware of what comes and goes.”
I believe that the witness is what enables me to live a conscious life, enables me to make my choices with awareness. When I find myself faced with difficult situations, situations that threaten to undermine my sense of safety or security, I can pull back and view it from a witness perspective.
“All developed mental men, those who get beyond the average, have in one way or another, or at least at certain times and for certain purposes, to separate the two parts of the mind, the active part, which is a factory of thoughts and the quiet masterful part which is at once a Witness and a Will, observing them, judging, rejecting, eliminating, accepting, ordering corrections and changes, the Master in the House of the Mind.”
Sri Aurobindo
Some likens the workings of the witness to that of a cybernetic system, for example a thermostat that has a set point with which it compares the signal from the thermometer, thus deciding whether or not to turn on the heat. Attentive awareness creates a cybernetic circuit within awareness itself, resulting not only in an increased control over thoughts and feelings, but a balancing and centering of them as well.
“No longer do we automatically identify with every passing thought and feeling that flows through the field of consciousness. We begin to establish a new platform from which to experience our landscape of existence. This platform is referred to as the Witness.” - Alan Combs
As to what chemical process allows this, I wonder again which came first the chicken or the egg?
"Cellular biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton, a former medical school professor and research scientist, was one of the first scientists to posit such extra-cellular control. Dr. Lipton conducted a series of experiments that reveal that the cell membrane, the outer layer of a cell, is the organic equivalent of a computer chip, and the cell’s equivalent of a brain.
Although this view conflicts with the widely held scientific dogma that genes control behavior, papers by other researchers have validated his iconoclastic thinking.
Dr. Lipton has also been a pioneer in applying the principles of quantum physics to the field of cellular biology. While traditional cell biology focuses on the physical molecules that control biology, Dr. Lipton’s work focuses on the mechanisms through which energy in the form of our beliefs can affect our biology, including our genetic code.
Dr. Lipton summarizes such leading edge science and explores its implications for our lives. Dr. Lipton shows that human beings can control gene activity and even rewrite their genes through their beliefs.
Until recently, it was thought that genes were self-actualizing…that genes could ‘turn themselves on and off.’ Such behavior is required in order for genes to control biology. Though the power of genes is still emphasized in current biology courses and textbooks, a radically new understanding has emerged at the leading edge of cell science. It is now recognized that the environment, and more specifically, our perception (interpretation)of the environment, directly controls the activity of our genes. Environment controls gene activity through a process known as epigenetic control."

I have had this blog entry in draft since Jan.
hey sophia....
WHO IS BEHIND THE WITNESS???
WHO IS THE WATCHER???
Be Well... mike :)
Hi Sophia... hope this finds you well. Looking with-in....
WHO ARE YOU?????? Pointing out instructions… Ken Wilber.
Be well Sophia....... mike
And this witnessing awareness is not itself anything specific you can see. It is just a vast, background sense of freedom-or pure emptiness-and in that pure emptiness, which you are, the entire manifest world arises.
You are that freedom, openness, emptiness-and not any itty bitty thing that arises in it.
You can kiss the sun, swallow the mountain, they are that close. Zen says "Swallow the Pacific Ocean in a single gulp," and that's the easiest thing in the world, when inside and outside are no longer two, when subject and object are nondual, when the looker and looked at are One Taste.
You see?
