So many thoughts have been swirling in my mind. I have always found that an open-ended brief is much more difficult to achieve completion of than one that is not. That is because there are just too many possibilities, too many options. What do you choose. What is appropriate for the moment?
Much as we might complain about our limitations, it is actually quite useful. People who are multi-talented often find it harder to be successful than people with limited talents, for they find it hard to decide what to concentrate on. When you have a vision, an insight, or an inspiration, you see before you with sudden clarity the answer to a pre-meditated question. It is so clear so simple. All you have to do is jot it down. Not so easy, when you try. Just too much at the same time. How do you impart that which comes from a non-linear dimension in a linear way.
Nyd is the runic symbol for necessity: "Need is a tight band on the breast, but it often can be Turned into an omen of help, if attended to early." Old English Rune Poem Necessity -
Ella Wheeller Wilcox
Necessity, whom long I deemed my foe,
Thou cold, unsmilling, and hard-visaged Dame
Now I no longer see thy face,
I know Thou wert my friend beyond reproach Or blame.
My best achievements and the fairest
Flights Of my winged fancy were inspired by Thee;
Thy stern voice stirred me to the mountain Heights;
Thy importunings bade me do and be.
But for thy breath, the spark of living fire
Within me might have smouldered out
At length ;
But for thy lash which would not let me Tire,
I never would have measured my own Strength.
But for thine ofttimes merciless control Upon my life,
that nerved me past Despair,
I never should have dug deep in my soul
And found the mine of treasures hidden There.
And though we walk divided pathways Now,
And I no more may see thee, to the end,
I weave this little chaplet for thy brow,
That other hearts may know, and hail thee friend.
Often when I find myself frustrated by my limitations,
I still myself and let the meaning of adversity filter through me.
Consider the uses of adversity: "Our suffering can destroy us, yes. But it can also make us whole… The tiny seed lives in the tree and clings to it like a child to a mother, an fable tells us. Then one day the wind comes along, as the wind must, and blows the seed into the air, where it floats about in nothingness thinking it is lost. "If only I had been a little stronger and held on to the tree a moment longer. If only the wind were not so cruel." Little does the seed understand that it will soon be dropped into the warm earth, where it will germinate, grow, and become transferred into a majestic tree. When this happens it will look back, understand the entire pattern of its own suffering and fulfillment, and say, "The wind was my helper, the wind was my ally, the wind was my friend." What do we really know of our own potential?

Oh, lowly caterpillar,
do you dream of freedom.
Do you look up into the sky and wish for wings.
Do you see rainbows of colour in your dreams?
Or do you see only the next leaf to devour?
